The ASPCA, among other animal-activist groups, have a lawsuit against Sarasota's beloved Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to be heard this week in New York, charging mistreatment of the show's elephants. No, really.
Maybe they should ask this guy what he thinks about elephants.
Most people don't know this, but, sometime during the mid-1920s, some circus elephants escaped and lived in the largely unpopulated wilds of what is now North Port. The incident below--colorized for your enjoyment--was relayed to me from the best friend of my step-brother's cousin, who was a couple grades behind the guy's uncle who owned the van, so I know this is for real:
